Created in March 2001 by the French cellist and  musicologist Franck Bernède, the Singhini Anusandhan Kendra (Singhini Research Centre) is a multidisciplinary company which seeks to  rediscover traditional repertoires of the Himalayas through musical research and performances.  Its  members are active in  research, teaching,  making musical recordings and giving concerts.  As individuals or in groups ( Maha Yantra, Vajra, Dance Mandal, Sukarma, Kala Mandapa…), they are the ambassadors of  Nepali music and dance abroad and are regularly invited to perform at  international festivals in Europe (Settembre Musica of Torino, Festival d'Ile de France, Festival of traditional music in Berlin, Festival of Asia in  Basel …),  in the United States (Princeton, Los Angeles University, California's Strawberry Festival, Arizona University...) and in diverse festivals in Asia (Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, India, China...).

 

Franck Bernède, the founder and coordinator of the  Singhini Anusandhan Kendra (Singhini Research Centre),  was born  in Dijon in 1958 into a family of musicians. He began his musical education under the guidance of his father,  the violonist and orchestra conductor Jean-Claude Bernède. After studying the cello at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon and the Sibelius Akademia of Helsinki (Finland), he concluded his training in baroque music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. He subsequently divided his time between performing concerts, teaching and research. Attracted  by early musical techniques and repertoires, he participated in the production and recording of  the major ensembles specializing in the musical works of the 17th and 18th centuries such as Le Concert des Nations (dir. Jordi Savall), l'Ensemble Baroque de Limoges (dir. C. Coin), les Arts Florissants (dir. William Christie), etc. He taught the cello, chamber music and ethnomusicology in many french educational institutes  (Conservatoires of Nantes, Grenoble, Aix en province, Briançon, Toulouse, National Institute for Oriental Studies..). For the last fifteen years, he has not only been a teacher and performed many concerts throughout the world, but also undertaken specific research in the musical traditions of the Himalayas. He is member of  the French National Center for Scientific Research  (C.N.R.S) "Milieux, Société et Culture en Himalaya" and the  French Society for Ethnomusicology (Musée de l'Homme, Paris). 

Manik Bajracharya, born in Bubahal, Lalitpur, in 1969 in a family of Buddhist priests began his training as a charya dancer under the guidance of pandit Ratna Kaji Bajracharya. He is a member of the Dance Mandal  group (dir. Prajwal Ratna Bajracharya) with whom he has performed both in Nepal (Royal Nepal Academy, City Hall, Russian Cultural Center, Alliance Française, Birendra International Convention Center, Goethe Institute…) and abroad (India,  Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France..). He is also a member of Lotus Research Centre, a cultural organisation dedicated to the heritage of Nepal Mandal in which  he conducts Research programmes and archive projects in a view to establish a digital information centre of Newar culture. Manik is a co-founder of the Singhini Research Centre and as a Charya dancer, he has participated with the organization in concert tours in France, Switzerland and Italy (Settembre Musica de Turin, Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Festival du Tibet et des Cultures Himalayennes de Paris, Avignon, Festival St James de Fours, Briançon..)

 
 

Manose Singh, born in Baudnath, Kathmandu, was drawn to the sound of the bamboo flute ( bansuri) as a young boy.  By the age of seventeen, he was deep into the study of the classical raga form, and already taking on students of his own.  His career as a performer and recording artist also began at this time.  He is one of the most noteworthy young instrumentalists of Nepal , known not only for his talent as a classical musician, but for his versatility, and his experimentations with many types of music, both Eastern and Western. Manose is the recipient of national awards, and appears regularly on Nepali TV and radio. He has toured Europe and America , performing at the Asian Festival in Basel Switzerland and at the Nepali Embassy in Bon Germany in 1996, and appearing with blue grass musician Peter Rowan at California 's Strawberry Festival in 1998.  Back in Nepal he has been working on a variety of projects including recording the musical score for a French documentary (The fish of Gods. ZED productions). He has released several CDs to date, including both classical ragas, and world music recorded in collaboration with international artists. Manose is a co-founder of the Singhini Research Centre. He has participated with the organization in concert tours in France, Switzerland and Italy (Settembre Musica de Turin, Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Festival du Tibet et des Cultures Himalayennes de Paris, Avignon, Festival St James de Fours, Briançon..)  

Atul Prasad Gautam, born in 1972 at Pashupati in Katmandu, started the practice of tabla at the age of 4. He has drawn attention of people for his talent during a National Competition (All Nepal Classical Music Competition) and then received his tabla education from Pt. Homnath Upadhyaya. Later, he has studied in Benares with the great masters Ramji Mishra (son of the famous Pt. Anokhelal Mishra), Shambhu Prasad Mishra (himself tabla guru Royal nepalese familly) and Pt. Chhotelal Mishra. He has a Bachelor of Art from the Prayag Sangit Samiti d'Allahabad (India), Today,  he divided his activities between teaching and concert performances. He is regulary invited to participate to productions radiophoniques et télévisuelles. He teach  the hindoustani musical tradition at Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu.  He is member of groups  Sukarma,  Narayan Music Academy,  Kirateswar Sangit Ashram. Atul  is co-founder of the Singhini Research Centre and has participated with the organization in a concert tour in France (Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Festival du Tibet et des Cultures Himalayennes de Paris, Avignon, Festival St James de Fours, Briançon..)  

 
 

Babu Raja Maharjan, born in 1977 at Ombahal, Kathmandu, started his aprrenteschip  of newar drums ( pashima dhimay, khim, konchakhim et daphakhim) with his grand father, Dev Narayan Maharjan, and the indo-nepalese drums madal and dholak with Nutche Bahadur Dangol. In the same time, he has studied the  tabla with  Ravin Lal Shresta. Babu Raja teach  drums at the "Holly Land International school of Bidhanagar". He is  member of the groups Buddha's Eyes. Babu Raja is a co-founder of the Singhini Research Centre. He has participated with the organization in a concert tour in France (Settembre Musica de Turin, Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Festival du Tibet et des Cultures Himalayennes de Paris, Avignon, Festival St James de Fours, Briançon..)  

Shyam Nepali, born in 1972 at  Kirtipur, started his  musical education (singing, dancing et playing sarangi) at the age of 8 with his grand father and father Magar Gainé and Ram Saran Nepali. His first public apparition during a musical  conpetition at the Royal Nepal Academy royale népalaise le propulse à l’âge de 15 ans sur la scène musicale népalaise. Then he created the group Surva with whom he released a first CD. His discography included today more than 10 publications (Heart Sutra, Journey to Nepal, Lumbini, sitaar khasa,  syawambhu..). He has participated  to many  performances in Nepal and abraod (Italy Japan, France...). Shyam is a co-founder of the Singhini Research Centre. He has participated with the organization in concert tours in France (Settembre Musica de Turin, Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Festival du Tibet et des Cultures Himalayennes de Paris, Avignon, Festival St James de Fours, Briançon..)  

 
 

Ramesh Maharjan, born in 1974 at Brahmatol,  Katmandou, has stared his training of charya dances at the age of 11 under the guidance of Pandit Ratna Kaji Bajracharya and Rajendra Shrestha. In the same time, he has studied  anciant techniques of the Maharjan danses tradition (dhimay pyakkhan) with Shiddhi Lal Maharjan of Patan, newar drums with his grand father, Krishna Bhai Maharjan, and classical singing with Kamal Chetri and Nisha Bhandari.  Member of the Naga Theater (studio-7) de l'hôtel Vajra (dir. Sabine Lehmann) since 1992, he has participated to numerous cultural performances with differents groups (Kala Mandapa, Netesori Kala etc.). He teach traditionnal music and dance in the Buddha Daya School to street childrens (CWIN, Pam). He has particiated to many programmes in Nepal (Alliance Française, American Cultural Center, British Council) and in India with the group Kala Mandapa.  

Bidur Rajkarnikar, born in 1976 at Haugal, Lalitpur, started the study of tabla at the age of seven under the  direction of his father, Prem Krishna Rajkarnikar. He completed  his classical education with  Krishna Narayan Shrestha and Ram Hari Gurung (disciple of Ustad Amir Hussein Khan). He has a Bachelor in music from Allahabad University (India). He is also specialized in the practice of Newar drums ( khimdhah and damokhim) under the direction of Ram Krishna Tamrakar. He is a member of the group Vajra with whom  he have already released 3 CDs. Bidur is a co-founder of the Singhini Research Centre and as a tabla player, he has participated with the organization in concert tours in France, Switzerland and Italy (Settembre Musica de Turin, Festival Estival de Paris, Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Festival du Tibet et des Cultures Himalayennes de Paris, Avignon, Festival St James de Fours, Briançon..)  

 
 

Swayambhu Ratna Shakya, born in 1968 à Katmandou,  has started his training of  classical singing  under the  direction of Nararaj Dhakal and charya git with Pandit Ratna Kaji Bajracharya. Member of  the group  Dance Mandal, he has participated to numerous programmes, both in Nepal and abroad  (Switzerland, Germany, India, Japan, Italy, France). In 1998, he has been awarded by the Gaddhi Arohan Padak by the king  Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. As an actor, Swayambhu has also de nombreux rôles in  theatre, for television and in feature films (Pumawangu, Hiupa, Aafnai Katha, Chandalika, etc.). He has also producted and recorded numerous film music (Jiwansathi, Bidhwansha, Bishwantar, Chandalika, etc.). As a popular singer, he has released solo albums  (Yo mausam, Hisi, Mayako Sansaar...).

Rameshwor Maharjan, born in  1975 at Brahmatol, Katmandou, started his musical and dance education at the age of seven with his grand father and father, Krishna Bhai Maharjan , le flute player Ram Krishna Maharjan. He completed his traditionnal training  with Lata Man Maharjan and Shiddhi Lal Maharjan. After Diplômé du "Fine Art Campus" de l'Université Tribhuvan pour le chant classique, et de la Prayag Sangit Samiti d'AIlahabad (Inde) pour les tabla, il aborde ensuite l'étude des danses rituelles du bouddhisme tantrique under the guidance of Pt. Ratna Kaji Bajracharya et de Rajendra Shrestha.  Dancer, actor and musician, il est rattaché depuis 1990 à la troupe du Naga Theater (Studio-7) de l'Hôtel Vajra (dir. Sabine Lehmann). Infatigable pédagogue,  il enseigne par ailleurs dans de nombreuses écoles de musique,  instituts et orphelinats et travaille en particulier avec les enfants des rues. Rameshwor s'est déjà produit tant au Népal (Royal Nepal Academy, Everest Cultural Society, etc.), qu’à l’étranger (Danemark, Suède, Inde, Espagne, France...).

 
 

Dhrubesh Chandra Regmi is born in  Kathmandu in  one of the great family of sitar player in Nepal. His grand father, Pt. Deva Chandra Regmi has been the first musician to  introduce  this instrument in Nepal, and his father, Pt. Satish Chandra Regmi was during many years the director of the Music Department of the Tribhuvan University. Dhrubesh started the study of sitar under his father's guidance. Then he obtain a "Master degree in Art" in New Delhi University and another master in the prestigious Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Today, he is teaching hindoustani musical tradition at the Tribhuvan University of Kathmandu. Dhrubesh share his activities between research, teaching and concert performances.  He is also preparing   a ethnomusicological study of the classical nepali music tradition during the time of the Rana (1846-1951) for  New Delhi University.  He has already been in  India and in the United States where he has aready given more than fifty concerts ands conferences on the classical  tradition (Princeton, California University, Los Angeles University, Arizona University, etc.).

Kiran Maharjan, born in  1973 in Brahmatol, Kathmandu, begun his musical training  under the direction of his father, the singer master (dapha guru) Lok Bahadhur Maharjan, and  traditional newar dances (dhimay pyakkhan) with Shiddi Lal Maharjan and Bina Joshi. He has studed  the  newar  drums with Krishna Bhai Maharjan as well as the classical  répertoire of the charya dances with Pandit Ratna Kaji Bajracharya and  Rajendra Shrestha. In 1993, he joint the compagny "Ethnical Cultural Group"of Patan. He is member of the  "Naga Theater of Vajra  hotel (dir. Sabine Lehmann) since  1992. Ramesh teach also music and danse in the schools"Shree Kumari" and "Pruna Tara"at  Katmandou a s well as in others private institutes. He has already participated to numerous performances  both in Nepal (Alliance Française, American Culture Center, British Council) and abraod  (Japan, Hongkong, India...).

   
 

Sati Devi Sharma, born in 1983 at Babarmahal, Kathmandu, begun her training of  traditional nepali dances with  Sumi Kahdka. She is member of the group "Ethnic Nepal" with whom she participate to many  performances  in  Nepal and abroad (Japan, Germany). With the Singhini Ensemble, Sati Devi has participated in June 2001 to a concert tour  in France (Grand Amphithéâtre de la Sorbonne, Festival du Tibet et des Cultures Himalayennes de Paris, Avignon, Festival St James de Fours, Briançon).

Ranju Shrestha, born in 1983 in Katmandou, has started her training  of  Kathak dance with  Hanny Shrestha in  Kanya Campus of Tribhuvan University  traditionnal nepali dances with Keshav Rai in the Nateswar Kala Kendra Institute. Then, she appears régulary on nepalese stages (Rastrya Savagriya / City hall, théâtre national  Nachghar...). As an actresse, Ranju has already participated to many cinematographic productions, as well as in feature films  (Bir Ganesh Man, Bahadur..) than for nepal television series (Hahir).
